Goldberg says Roman Reigns looks like a girl when he tackles people with his Spear.
Goldberg has made the Spear an iconic finisher over the years. Having won numerous matches with the move, he has become a legend in the wrestling world. Plenty of wrestlers continue to use the Spear, including Reigns.
Speaking on the Roman Atwood podcast, Goldberg looked back on the origin of the Spear. He noted that, at the time, he didn't even know what a finisher was, but the trainers wanted to make sure he had an impactful one.
“I’m walking out and Jody [Hamilton], he was the leader of the Power Plant at the time, and we were working in Orlando at Universal Studios, dark matches. It was the first dark match I had, and right before I go out, he goes, what’s your finish? I went, what's that? He goes, what do you do at the end to win? I go, I don’t know. Am I gonna win? He goes, whatever you do, make it impactful. This is before I came up with the Jackhammer thing. Well Sarge came up with it, one of my trainers," Goldberg said.
The WWE Hall of Famer then recalled his first Spear and the way it impressed everyone in the back. He joked that he was glad the Spear became his finisher early on because it let him feel like he was still on the football field.
"I’m like, I don’t know what to do. So I get out in the ring, and I’m like, well, let’s just let the instinct kick in. I looked across the ring, it was a dude named Manny Fernandez. I’ll never forget it. I looked at him before the bell rang, and I said, ‘Manny, do you trust me?’ He goes, ‘Yeah.’ I said, ‘When the finish comes, just tuck your chin, spread your legs, and kiss your ass goodbye. He’s like, ‘What?’ The bell rang, and I’m like okay, here we go. I hope he’s ready, and I ran him over. I came to the back and everybody’s jaw was on the ground. They went, whatever you just did, do that every time. I’m like, that’s pretty simple, and thank you because that’s just like me being on the football. So that’s kind of where that came from," he said.
Goldberg then described how many other wrestlers started using the Spear over the years, even when he signed with WWE. The legend specifically brought up the way Reigns uses it and stated that he looks like a girl when it tackles people.
"It’s weird because I was the only person who did it. Then the Monday Night Wars come, right, and then they started doing it to take away from what I was doing. Now I’m over there, and people are doing it. I’ll just be honest, Roman said how stupid it is, go out and hit people hard. Well, if you can hit people hard and blur that line and not hurt ‘em, I think it’s pretty smart. Plus, I don’t look like a, no offense, girl when I tackle people," Goldberg said.
In the same interview, Goldberg stated that his WWE contract ends in two months. More information is available here.
