Shane Helms Explains Why He Continues To Perform As "The Hurricane"

Why does he continue to work as The Hurricane?

Gregory Helms has been in the pro wrestling business since the early 90's and during his tenure as a wrestler he adapted the persona of a character named "The Hurricane". Under the character Helms captured the WWE and WCW Cruiserweight Championships, WWF Hardcore Championship and is also a two-time World Tag Team Champion.

To this day Helms still wrestles as The Hurricane as seen during his appearance in the 2018 men's Royal Rumble match and recently it was announced that The Hurricane would be making his Ring Of Honor debut during their Texas loop which starts this weekend. During an interview with TheSportster Helms explained why he continues to wrestle as The Hurricane although he has found success without the character.

"I tried [wrestling without the mask] when I did Lucha Libre USA because everyone had a mask I thought, 'To stand out, I’ll take mine off.' I called myself the Shane Event, but the crowd was chanting ‘Hurricane’ the whole time." He continued, "It just shows that it works. People still chant '3 Count' [WCW group consisting of Shane Helms, Shannon Moore and Evan Karagias]. And we only did '3 Count' for nine months. I think people in some people’s heads we did it for years, but it was only nine months."

Gregory Helms is a Fightful alum and he did a number of podcasts that are available to listen to and can be watched.
