The IWGP United States Championship was on the line at New Japan Pro Wrestling's 'Resurgence.'
On July 28th, a video message from Hiroshi Tanahashi aired during AEW Dynamite in which he made it clear that he wanted to face the IWGP United States Champion and that he was intrigued by that belt. Later during that same episode, Lance Archer defeated Hikuleo to retain the title and, subsequently, accepted Tanahashi's challenge.
The two men faced off in the main event of Resurgence, trading near falls throughout. Archer dominated early on, but Tanahashi fought back, targeting the right leg of the Murderhawk Monster. It was Tanahashi who would emerge victoriously, though, pinning Archer and capturing the title for the first time.
As a singles competitor, Tanahashi has now held the IWGP Heavyweight, United States, Intercontinental, and NEVER Openweight Championships.

This was Lance Archer's second reign with the belt. He won it just over three weeks ago in a Texas Death Match with Jon Moxley on night two of AEW's Fyter Fest.
