Ellsworth joined WWE last year after getting destroyed by Braun Strowman. He got over with his catch phrase "any man with two hands has a fighting chance". He soon became a regular on Smackdown as a babyface, building to a match between him and AJ Styles for the WWE title. He won, but by DQ. He did, however, manage to win a contract after defeating AJ Styles in a ladder match.

He turned heel shortly afterwards, aligning himself with Carmella. They weren't a couple, but merely friends. He would help her win the Money in the Bank briefcase, and would continue to be associated with one another until last week, where Carmella had it with Ellsworth after losing a match to Becky Lynch. In a video posted on WWE's YouTube, she said that Ellsworth was in the doghouse, not outright ending the association, but it did look like it was in trouble.

Ellsworth posted a tweet in response to the release.

He had spent most of the European tour getting beat up by various women superstars. He wasn't on Smackdown yesterday.
