John Bradshaw Layfield reflects on a 2004 house show angle with Eddie Guerrero's mother.
The feud between Eddie Guerrero and John Bradshaw Layfield in 2004 catapulted the veteran Bradshaw to the WWE Championship, a move that had a ripple effect that would lead to John Cena capturing the title and becoming the face of the company.
The rivalry between Guerrero and Bradshaw was also presented as very personal and volatile. At a WWE house show in 2004, Eddie Guerrero was celebrating in the ring with his mother when Bradshaw came in and blindsided Guerrero. Bradshaw would then confront Mrs. Guerrero and she would appear to have a "heart attack."
Bradshaw is now reflecting on the angle in a series of posts on X. In his posts, he speaks about guiding Mrs. Guerrero to make sure she could have the safest bump possible and having special security to get out of the building that night.
Bradshaw also said the idea for the angle came directly from Eddie Guerrero and his brother Java Guerrero Sr. better known at that time as Chavo Classic.
The police gave me an escort out of town and told me to drive to Odessa, Texas and fly out from there. They told me they thought I would be killed if I stayed in El Paso. I had to leave so fast to prevent a riot I was driving in my wrestling gear. Chavo Sr and Eddie’s idea to do… https://t.co/dXPllBhGLN

Notice how, when I put my hand on Mrs Guerrero, I guided (and held her) all the way to the ground. It was so she could take a bump safely. She made it look fantastic. When she went down and the place was in shock-Eddie said “Ese, you better get the $#*@ outta here!” https://t.co/cN8Lik2LT1

I had to have extra security everywhere after this, lol. I think WWE was worried I’d be shot or stabbed and wouldn’t make the Staples Center. https://t.co/nO0wIKcvsS

Eddie Guerrero and JBL would have two matches on pay-per-view. The first took place at WWE Judgment Day in 2004 and devolved into a bloodbath by the end of the show. Then, at the inaugural WWE Great American Bash pay-per-view, Bradshaw defeated Eddie in a Texas Bull Rope match to capture the WWE Championship. He would go on to hold the title for nearly a year before dropping it to John Cena at WWE WrestleMania 21.
Bradshaw returned to WWE television as part of the 2024 WWE Draft where he announced some draft picks on behalf of Raw and SmackDown. Learn more here.
