The spinner design of the WWE Championship is as polarizing as the person who debuted the championship. John Cena was very proud of his creation when it first debuted, but Edge didn't want much to do with that design.
Speaking on a new episode of WWE Untold revolving around his rivalry with Edge in 2006, John Cena detailed just how involved he was in the creation of the spinner belt saying that he was meticulous about everything right down to the materials and the size of the diamonds in the championship.
“How I was about the Spinner championship belt -- I was much more involved and meticulous about the design. Where the diamonds should be, the size of the diamonds, the shape of the spinner, the size of the diamonds on the inside of the spinner, where the colored gems should be, the difference in metal, what the leather should feel like. Like, I was so much more into that,” said Cena of the WWE Championship design that he helped debut in 2005 and stuck around until 2013.
On the flip side, there is Edge. Edge defeated John Cena for the championship in 2006 and became the second person in history to hold the spinner WWE Championship design.
Speaking candidly on WWE Untold, Edge admitted he did not like the design, and when he found out he was getting his own custom Championship, he designed his own title which was never officially made because WWE made the creative decision to just place Edge’s logo inside of the spinner belt.
“I hated the spinner belts, despised them. When they came to me and said, 'we're going to do a Rated-R Championship,' I was like, 'Right. Let me get to work.' I went home. I drew up a beautiful championship. I mean, this thing was badass. Then I show up and they're like, 'well, no, we're just going to put your logo in.' I was like, 'that's it? Because Edge wouldn't want a spinner belt.’ To me, this is the one championship that needs to look like a championship, not like some of these hubcaps.”
Ultimately, this championship belt design would transcend both of these men and their rivalry. Overall, thirteen WWE Superstars would go on to hold that championship. CM Punk would hold it the longest with his notorious 434-day title run. The Rock would be the last person to hold the championship when he defeated CM Punk at the Royal Rumble in 2013.
