John Cena wants someone to takeover as the wrestler who can carry WWE going forward.
On Talking Smack after SmackDown Live’s go home show Tuesday, Cena and General Manager Daniel Bryan appeared on the WWE Network program. Host Renee Young asked the Leader of Cenation if he thought AJ Styles could be the one to take his spot.
"I'm openly waiting for someone to step up and do that," Cena said.
Bryan followed up Cena’s response asking what it would take for someone to move into the coveted spot in the company. Cena said “absolute consistency," among other things.
"Everybody asks me, 'hey, when are you moving over?' It just fuels me to get stronger, faster and hone my craft more," Cena said. "People have moments, moments that last in the annals of WWE history. But if you look at what I've done, I just show up all the time and deliver. I am waiting for someone after 14 years to show up all the time and deliver. You can ask many other WWE Superstars who know exactly how hard that is. I am just waiting for someone not to do it once, just to do it consistently better."
The 39-year-old Superstar has possibly the most crossover appeal of any wrestler in the company today, but plans to stay with WWE. He hosted the 2016 ESPY Awards, hosts and is an executive producer on the Fox reality show American Grit, and is a frequent guest host on The Today Show.
Cena has appeared in cameo to starring roles in movies since at least 2000. He has been featured in films like The Marine, Trainwreck, Daddy’s Home and others.
