Johnny Gargano left NXT in December 2021 as his contract had expired. In his final segment, he was attacked by Grayson Waller.
Gargano returned to WWE in August 2022, joining the Raw brand. On the March 7 episode of NXT, he would return to his original home to seek revenge on Waller as it was announced that he would face Waller at NXT Stand & Deliver.
"To be able to comeback there, it was a moment that was in the works for a long time," Gargano said on Busted Open Radio. "Obviously, when I came back to WWE, that was always in the back of my mind. The moment Grayson Waller took me out, if things were to work out and I was to comeback to WWE, I knew that we would settle the score sometime, someplace, right place, right time. To comeback to NXT and have that moment, hear that crowd, and have it be a complete surprise. Say what you want abut the Garganos, the Garganos can keep a secret. No one knows when we're showing up anywhere. To have that moment again really filled my heart with much joy. It's an amazing thing and I'm very excited for Stand & Deliver to get one more TakeOver event under my belt and wrap my story up the right way."
When asked if he would be splitting his time between NXT and Raw going forward, Gargano replied, "As it stands right now, for me, Stand & Deliver, that's the end of Johnny Gargano's story in NXT."
Gargano will face Waller in an Unsanctioned match at NXT Stand & Deliver.
