Katsuyori Shibata captured the ROH Pure Championship at ROH Supercard of Honor by defeating Wheeler Yuta.
Shibata is set to be part of the upcoming ROH television tapings, and now that he's the champion, he feels one step closer to facing ROH legend Bryan Danielson.
"By winning this title, I feel like I got one step closer to making the chance to wrestle Bryan Danielson. Step by step," he said (via translator Michael Nakazawa) during the ROH Supercard of Honor media scrum.
Tony Khan said they are taking things match by match with Shibata through the AEW/ROH partnership with NJPW.
"I'm from New Japan, but I wrestle a lot here because I want to challenge myself and because of the pandemic, the crowd went silent and were small in Japan for New Japan. Staying there...I want to get my view wider and wrestle at many places. In AEW or ROH ring, there is a big dream. A wrestlers job is showing dreams to the fans. This is where I can make the dream come true. I keep wrestling after the injury, so many fans worry about my injury and condition, but I keep wrestling not to kill myself or die in the ring, but to keep living my life," he said.
Danielson has not competed at a ROH event since Tony Khan purchased the company in March 2022.
