Former TNA X-Division stand-out Mark Andrews is excited to showcase himself and British wresting during the WWE United Kingdom Tournament.
On January 5th, WWE announced a tournament to crown the first WWE United Kingdom Champion. Andrews, the only Welshman in the field, was a late addition to the field of 16 competitors. In an interview with WWE.com, Andrews expressed his excitement about the tournament.
“I was incredibly excited that WWE had chosen to come to the U.K. and feature a lot of British talent. I feel like this country has a strong history of wrestling, with the likes of William Regal going to the States and becoming an icon and hero for wrestlers across Britain. Now, they’re bringing this tournament to the U.K. and showing off what the U.K. has been for the last 20 years without the platform to show it to the world. I’m incredibly excited to be a part of it,” said Andrews.
He explained that the British style of wrestling is primarily grappling-based, and Andrews, who considers himself a high-flyer, said his style will be a contrast to many of the competitors. But, he said, this tournament is not only a chance for British wrestling but also to showcase himself individually.
“I’m hoping that this can be the platform for me to show the world what they’ve been missing. It’s my opportunity to show the world what I’ve been training for over the last 10 years. I’m a high-flying wrestler, but I’m also in a band, and I try and incorporate that presence, with stage dives and stuff like that, into my performance. I base my life around the motto ‘one life, one shot.’ Which is how I’m approaching this tournament, that ‘you only live once’ attitude. I hope the WWE fans can get behind that,” said Andrews.
The tournament will take place January 14th and 15th, live on the WWE Network from Blackpool, England. The winner will become WWE United Kingdom Champion. Andrews also discussed playing music and his competitors in his interview.
