Matt Hardy wants to protect the legacy of The Hardys.
Both Matt and Jeff Hardy are a big talking point in the world of wrestling at the moment, as Matt Hardy's contract with AEW is close to expiring. Hardy has previously stated that he has a new offer on the table from AEW, but he has yet to sign on the dotted line, as he is weighing his options in the world of wrestling.
While speaking to Chris Van Vliet for a new interview, Hardy was asked to talk about what is most important to him at this stage of his career.
“What’s important to me more than anything else right now is just the legacy of Jeff and I. We get mentioned in the conversation of the greatest tag team ever. We want to help younger teams, we want to build younger teams, but also, you have to be put into a position to succeed where you do seem relevant and like you’re at the top of your game. You can’t just go out there and get beat every single week. So it’s very important to me that we’re utilized in the right way so that when we do have a program with someone, and when we build to a big match and they beat us, it means something. If you just get beat without reason, it doesn’t mean anything.”
Hardy went on to talk about where both he and Jeff are currently at from a physical and mental standpoint.
“I mean, I think a legacy can be completed [with] like a good run as tag team champions somewhere else, where we have good quality matches with guys that we are smartly booked against. Because Jeff right now is in one of the best stages of his life he’s ever been in through the entirety of his wrestling career. He’s got everything together in his personal life, which is very good. He’s also a maniac now that he’s in this position. He gets up every morning at 5 a.m. and does cardio for an hour, that’s just kinda what he does and that’s his drill. He’s also taking really good care of himself and he’s got it together. I think between him and I kind of going through this mid-life transformation and being in the best shape that we can be in, I do think there is legs in us being successful as a tag team wherever it may be.”
Van Vliet went on to ask Hardy about the possibility of the duo appearing at WrestleMania 40, just seven years after their shocking return to WWE at WrestleMania 33.
“It’s great that people think that. It makes me happy. It makes people excited. If you hear someone talk about a ladder match, are they gonna show up, that’s great. I don’t know, it’s pro wrestling man and in pro wrestling, never say never.”
