Jay Lethal was happy for Taven.
After spending nine years of his professional wrestling career with Ring Of Honor, Matt Taven captured his first World Championship in the company at Ring Of Honor's joint show with New Japan Pro Wrestling this past April entitled G1 Supercard which emanated from Madison Square Garden. Taven won the title in a Ladder match involving Marty Scurll and Jay Lethal. When Scurll, Lethal and Taven met up to be informed of the booking decision for the match, they found out that Taven was winning the title and a smile popped up on the face of Jay Lethal.
Matt Taven shared that information while being interviewed by Justin Barrasso of Sports Illustrated to promote Friday's Best In The World pay-per-view.
"We were all told at the same time, but the smile on Jay’s face made the moment so much more meaningful for me,” Taven says. “I’ve dedicated my life to this, but I knew I didn’t do it alone. I started in Ring of Honor with Jay Lethal in 2014. He knows me and understands the work I’ve put in. Jay’s my greatest rival, and he’s made me so much better. Climbing that ladder was the moment I’ve wanted since I was six,” said Taven. “I’ve given my life and my body to be a wrestler. I would have been happy for either Jay or Marty had they won, they’re two of the best in the world. They offered me the same respect, and now the opportunity is mine.”

At Best In The World, Taven will put his ROH World Title on the line against Jeff Cobb. Although Taven has a test ahead of him, he was asked about potential challengers to his World Title including challengers from other companies such as Chris Jericho and Adam "Hangman" Page who'll be competing for the vacant AEW World Championship at All Out.
“Are you kidding me?” Taven says. “Of course I would. Jericho is a legend, and I’ve been in the ring before with Adam Page. We had Ring of Honor tryouts together and were signed on the same day. He’s such a genuine guy, I couldn’t be happier for his success. If you watched Double or Nothing, how could you not be excited?” Taven says. “I think the world of Cody and the Bucks, they’re amazing. I want more people to enjoy wrestling, and that’s accomplished through growing the industry as a whole. AEW is doing a great job with that.”
