Maven reflects on being squashed by Triple H on the Road to WrestleMania in 2003 and how that particular match even rubbed Dwayne Johnson the wrong way.
On an episode of WWE Raw in March 2003, Maven had the opportunity to face WWE World Champion Triple H one-on-one. The match was a traditional squash match in the vein of what fans would regularly see on WWE television in the 1980s, a practice that had long since started to fade away by the time Maven stepped into the ring with "The Game."
In a recent YouTube video where Maven reflects on the match, he recalls The Rock letting him know that the match bothered him and making a promise to work with Maven once he returned to WWE in the future.
"Following this match, The Rock would actually pull me aside and just voice his displeasure, tell me he didn't just appreciate the way I was jobbed out, the fact that I was squashed, and said, 'Business has to be done a different way.' He didn't appreciate, he didn't like the way Hunter just pretty much used me. I wasn't in a position to where I could say anything. I was just happy to be on the damn show," he admits, 'but the fact that Rock took the time to tell me, 'Hey, man, I don't like what he did.' Then he told me something. He said, 'When I come back,' and I don't know where he was going, maybe he was filming a movie, doing something, he said, 'When I come back, we'll do something together.' He was, he was trying to make things right. Now, it never happened, and to be honest with you, I'm still waiting on it, but the fact that he took the time to pull me aside, and the mere fact that he was in my corner, rooting for my career, truly meant the world to me."
Unfortunately for Maven, The Rock only wrestled one more match after 2003 before going away for seven years.
Fortunately for Maven, he would go on to have a brush with the main event scene on WWE Raw in 2004, leading to a match with Triple H that was far more competitive for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship following the 2004 WWE Survivor Series. Learn more about that match here.
