MVP Credits Son For His WWE Return

MVP's recent run in WWE can be attributed to his son.

After making his return at the Royal Rumble this year, it was initially thought that he was going to end his in-ring career the following night on Raw. But as he explains it in an interview with the Daily Star, MVP said he wanted to surprise his son by having his first WWE event be the Royal Rumble where MVP would make a surprise entrance.

"I didn't intend to return full time, my intention was to return briefly for my son, who is a big wrestling fan now. Royal Rumble was in Houston and he was constantly drop kicking and suplexing pillows on the bed and would ask me 'Daddy, you know WWE wrestling?' So I thought it would be a really cool surprise for his first event to be Royal Rumble, so I reached out and asked about being a surprise entry. Much to my pleasure, WWE welcomed it with open arms," MVP said.

Originally, MVP was going to have his last match against Rey Mysterio the night after the Royal Rumble and then work as a producer. However, one thing led to another and not only did he return as a regular on-screen character, but also as a wrestler embroiled in a feud with United States Champion Apollo Crews.

"So it was supposed to be a one-off, but it turned in to me wrestling Rey Mysterio the following night - who is his favorite wrestler - so I was just thrilled to be able to give that gift to my son. Then I was offered a job to be a producer and had accepted that job, and the next thing I know I was offered the [VIP Lounge] and a few other segments. It was then 'Hey don't worry about being a producer, can we put you on tv on a regular basis?' I love that my son watches me on tv on a weekly basis now, and I still have a lot of experience and knowledge that I can share... it's' a beautiful moment. 45 was my cut-off and, if it weren't for COVID, I would probably have retired this year - but I didn't consult my son, and I think he wants me to continue to wrestle for a while," MVP said.

MVP was supposed to have a match against Crews for the United States Championship at Extreme Rules but that match never happened.
