Roman Reigns stunned the wrestling world when it was revealed that he had aligned himself with Paul Heyman following his return to television in August.
Heyman and Reigns have been associated in some ever since Reigns debuted as part of The Shield in 2012 to protect Heyman's client CM Punk. They've also been on at odds during Reigns' wars with Brock Lesnar. As Heyman explained to Ariel Helwani on his MMA Show, this alliance has been years in the making.
"This has been in the works for eight years. If you think back to how Roman Reigns debuted in WWE, he was part of The Shield and they started as the protectors of CM Punk's title reign. It was revealed that I was behind The Shield. I've been associated with Roman Reigns since his very first day on the main roster. It's something we have all thought about since the beginning. The time was never right. Once you pull that trigger, it's like jumping off the cliff. You can't get back to the top. Once you go there, you have to go there all the way. When Roman wanted to return, he wanted to do something different. Having eight years of a body of work behind him and looking to enter a new part of his career. All the stars were aligned," he said.
The partnership between Reigns and Heyman has been a big success from a critical perspective as fans have enjoyed the story they are telling alongside Jey Uso.
