Sometimes in wrestling, it's easier to push the envelope too far and work backward when building a new cornerstone character.
Appearing on WWE’s After The Bell podcast, NXT producer, Brian “Road Dogg” James revealed himself to be a big fan of Dexter Lumis and discussed how interesting of a character he believes Dexter will become and the incredibly high potential that those in charge of the black and gold brand already believe Lumis has.
“Dexter Lumis, I think, again, he's right out of the gate, but right out of the gate, he is interesting as a character and people want to know more about him. As a human being, he's a great guy with a lot of really cool talents and we'll be getting into those. But again, it wasn't me. It was a team effort,” he began. “So, I had a class before the TV started. Of course, we didn't do much in-ring stuff because I wasn't an in-ring guy. We watched a lot of tape, talked about a lot of characters. He was one that I got really interested in and I went way too far with. I had him licking people in a rare chin lock and lick their cheek, you know, just go way too far. Then you see what works and what doesn't work. It's easy to reel it back. Yeah. The hard part is [to] get them out of their comfort zone and get them to go that far and then you can kind of reel it back in and control it a little bit.”
He continued, “[Dexter Lumis] was one that was definitely a team effort, but his character alone has already got people talking and his character alone has already got us thinking like main events and stuff like that. You know what I mean? Like this guy, he wasn't even on TV three months ago, and now we're talking about putting him in that picture, you know? So, he's just a really cool one.”
Lumis has most recently been seen helping out The Velveteen Dream in an effort to neutralize Undisputed ERA’s impact on Velveteen’s bouts with Adam Cole for the NXT Championship.
While he is not scheduled for the card, Lumis may lend yet another helping hand to Velveteen Dream at NXT TakeOver: In Your House in NXT’s first-ever Backlot Brawl for the NXT Championship.
Fightful will have live coverage of TakeOver: In Your House beginning at 6:30 p.m. Eastern on Sunday, June 7, 2020.
