The Rock explains why he's taking on a more serious role.
In December it was announced that The Rock (Dwayne Johnson) would play Mark Kerr in "The Smashing Machine." Benny Safdie wrote and will direct the film, and has been developing this project alongside Johnson since 2019.
Safdie directed "Uncut Gems," which highlighted Adam Sandler in a dramatic role. The Rock is known for starring in Hollywood blockbusters and playing an action hero, but playing Kerr in "The Smashing Machine" will be his most dramatic role yet.
“I want to be clear not to say that this is an abandonment of big, four-quadrant movies. I love making them, and there is tremendous value and importance in [them] … but there’s a time and a place for them. I’m at this point in my career where I want more. And I don’t mean I want more box office. I mean I want more humanity. And that is why Benny Safdie is the perfect, collaborative, hungry partner for me," The Rock told Variety.
The Rock returned to WWE TV on the January 1 episode of WWE Raw Day One, laying out Jinder Mahal and teasing a confrontation with Roman Reigns.
