Ring of Honor and New Japan Pro Wrestling have joined forces to fill Madison Square Garden.
On Thursday, Ring of Honor made the following announcement via the promotion's website and Twitter account. ROH will be teaming up with NJPW to present G1 Supercard in New York City at Madison Square Gardens on April 6th, 2019 which is the night before WWE holds WrestleMania 35 at New Jersey's MetLife Stadium.
The following is an excerpt from the press release at ROHWrestling.com.
For 16 years, Ring of Honor Wrestling has created some of the top stars in professional wrestling, and for nearly 50 years, New Japan Pro-Wrestling has brought Japanese Strong Style to the world. Together, these two companies have delivered world class shows such as “War of the Worlds,” “Strong Style Evolved,” “Global Wars,” “Honor Rising,” and the “G1 Special,” which NJPW has launched as a special kickoff in the United States to their annual “G1 Climax,” known as one of the most elite tournaments in professional wrestling.
ROH and NJPW are proud to announce that on April 6th, 2019, the companies will join forces to present the ultimate wrestling event, “G1 Supercard,” to fans from around the world, LIVE from Madison Square Garden in New York City!
This announcement comes after NJPW has ventured into more shows in the United States including the G1 Special last week and Strong Style Evolved earlier this year.
Ring of Honor reportedly had a date scheduled for Madison Square Garden but the COO Joe Koff said it was rescinded after the venue spoke with WWE. That issue seems to have been resolved.
Wrestlers from NJPW at the event will include Kazuchika Okada, Hiroshi Tanahashi, and Tetsuya Naito according to the press release which also said fans should expect Championship matches and a "marquee event."
Fightful Wrestling will continue to report on this event as it develops until April.
