SANADA won the NJPW New Japan Cup 2023 tournament on March 21, defeating David Finlay in the finals. SANADA picked up the victory with his modified DDT.
As a result of his victory, SANADA will challenge Kazuchika Okada for the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship at NJPW Sakura Genesis.

SANADA left Los Ingobernables de Japon after defeating Tetsuya Naito in the quarterfinals of the tournament, joining DOUKI, Taichi, Yoshinobu Kanemaru, & TAKA Michinoku in Just Four Guys to become Just Five Guys.
SANADA defeated Taichi, KENTA, Naito, and Mark Davis during his run to the finals.
