Shawn Michaels talks about keeping championships safe from theft when he was a professional wrestler.
Recently, it was revealed that WALTER had his NXT UK Championship stolen, and the fan that returned it shared his story on social media.
When asked about this during the post-show media scrum following the second night of NXT TakeOver: Stand & Deliver, Shawn Michaels would reflect on never having lost a championship when he was an active competitor because back in his day, the champions kept their title belts in Halliburton briefcases.
“I never had mine stolen,” Shawn Michaels began. “I gotta say that back in the day, that’s why all guys carried the title. We had them in the little Halliburtons that you could, back then, you would check them through the machine at the airports because you would carry it on you, most of the time. Even me, I don’t think I ever lost one, which is pretty amazing.”
After that, Triple H quipped that Ric Flair would lose his championships every other week.
While Shawn Michaels may have never lost a physical championship belt, he did refuse to send his Intercontinental Championship back after going on hiatus following a failed drug test in 1993.
The failed drug test and Shawn Michaels' subsequent refusal to send back his Intercontinental Championship resulted in one of the most iconic matches in WrestleMania history.
At WrestleMania 10, Shawn Michaels and Razor Ramon unified their respective Intercontinental Championship belts in a Ladder Match. This match was widely considered to be the launching pad of Shawn Michaels' main event career with Ric Flair frequently saying that on that evening in 1994, “Shawn Michaels went out and wrestled a ladder and there just happened to be another guy in the ring with him.”
