The NXT Championship match is set for NXT TakeOver 36.
NXT taped the July 27 episode of the program on July 21 from the Capitol Wrestling Center. During the tapings, the NXT Title bout for TakeOver 36 was made official.

During the tapings, it was announced that Samoa Joe will challenge Karrion Kross for the NXT Championship at NXT TakeOver 36 on August 22.
Joe came out and offered his resignation to NXT GM William Regal. Joe than said that instead of firing Kross for his actions on the July 20 episode of NXT where Kross attacked Regal, Joe wanted him at TakeOver.
Regal agreed to the bout and signed the paperwork.
This would mark Joe's first match since the February 10, 2020 episode of WWE Raw when he teamed with Kevin Owens & The Viking Raiders (Erik & Ivar) to take on AOP (Akam & Rezar), Murphy & Seth Rollins.
Joe had been battling concussion issues, which put him in the WWE Raw commentary booth before he was released by WWE in April. He then returned to NXT in June.
