CMLL star and current NJPW Strong Women’s Champion, CMLL World Women's Champion & CMLL World Women's Tag Team Champion Stephanie Vaquer was announced as coming soon to AEW during the May 29 episode of AEW Dynamite.
Vaquer was then highlighted in a video package narrated by AEW broadcaster Excalibur.

Vaquer then appeared later in the evening as she confronted Mercedes Mone.
Mone had just defended the TBS Title against Skye Blue when Vaquer's music hit and she stood on the stage, holding the NJPW STRONG Openweight Title.

Mone was almost the inaugural NJPW STRONG Openweight Champion but lost to Willow Nightingale in the tournament finals.
