Sting says he has not decided on his date for his retirement.
Sting, 64, previously revealed that his AEW contract will expire sometime in 2023, and in a promo on AEW Dynamite, he stated that "Showtime" was coming up. Tony Khan subsequently stated that Sting has not given him a set time for his retirement. At AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door 2023, Sting, Darby Allin, and Tetsuya Naito scored a win over Chris Jericho, Sammy Guevara, and Minoru Suzuki.
Speaking at the AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door post-show media scrum, Sting was asked about his previous comments and whether he had decided on a date for his last match.
"I have not decided on a date, for sure. A lot of people have actually wondered if I was going to retire at Wembley. That would be kind of cool, but I don’t see that happening. I think I’m going to continue on. Tony has been in my ear here and there saying, ‘Steve, you can stay as long as you want.’ I’m not sure how long that will be, but like I said a few months ago, Showtime is just about over with, and it truly is, but I’m looking forward to going back to London. Last time I was there, I was Joker Sting, the crowd loved it there and it was not the big stadium, but still a great crowd. I’m looking forward to heading back over there," Sting said.
During Sting's portion of the scrum, Chris Jericho stormed in, clearly frustrated with the outcome of the match at the pay-per-view. He challenged Sting and Allin to a Tornado Tag Team match, where he would compete as The Painmaker, on the June 28 episode of AEW Dynamite, and Tony Khan agreed to book the match.
