Tanahashi & Ishii earned their shot by winning a number one contenders match against Grizzled Young Veterans James Drake & Zack Gibson and TMDK members Robbie Eagles & Bad Dude Tito at NJPW Capital Collision.
Nicholls & Haste successfully defended their titles against Hechicero & Virus at NJPW Capital Collision.
After the match, Ishii & Tanahashi issued the challenge for Royal Quest. With Tanahashi being the President of NJPW, the challenge meant the match was official.
