Paul Wight has taken on a new role in AEW taking over the play-by-play duties on AEW Dark: Elevation. Wight previously served as a color commentator on the show working alongside Tony Schiavone.
Though Wight has over 25 years of experience in wrestling, being a play-by-play announcer requires different thinking than being a color commentator, a role most former wrestlers end up taking.
Speaking on What Happened When, Schiavone discussed Wight's move to play-by-play announcing and his willingness to learn.
"Paul Wight is starting to do play-by-play for us on Elevation. I think he'll be very good. I told him, 'Go back and listen to Gorilla Monsoon. Listen to all of what he did.' Paul is willing to learn and work hard at being an announcer," he said.
Wight doesn't wrestle full-time but has competed in a handful of matches in AEW. He last wrestled on the April 4, 2022 episode of AEW Dark: Elevation, defeating Austin Green.
Shaquille O'Neal recently challenged to Wight to find a tag team partner for a bout against him and Diamond Sheik. You can learn more about the challenge by clicking here.
