Tony Schiavone Told Tony Khan He Wanted To Do Play-By-Play Again, Thought He'd Call AEW Rampage

Fans at home got a surprise on Saturday's AEW Collision when Tony Schiavone was the man to greet them at the announce table.

Schiavone was flanked by Kevin Kelly and Nigel McGuinness on commentary, making things a three-man booth. Kelly and Nigel previously ran a two-man booth on AEW Collision with Jim Ross joining them for the main event.

Speaking on What Happened When, Schiavone provided insight to his AEW Collision commentary role.

"I told Tony [Tony Khan], this was months ago, 'I would like another chance at doing play-by-play. I can probably do Rampage.' He said, 'Okay, let me think about it.' I thought I was going to do play-by-play on Rampage. Then he hit me with [Collision], and you don't say no to that, you say, 'Hell yeah, I'll do it.' I've told you this many times, and I'm sincere about it, Kevin Kelly is a great announcer. He is so smooth and so good. I really enjoyed working with him and Nigel. We've only worked together once, but we've been together backstage for however many months," he said.

Schiavone has filled many roles in AEW, serving an in-ring interviewer, color commentator on AEW Dynamite, and now play-by-play announcer on AEW Collision. He is also the senior producer backstage. He famously did play-by-play commentary for WCW during the Monday Night Wars.
