In the last couple of events leading into No Mercy, the Raw crew was headlined by gimmick matches between Roman Reigns and Braun Strowman. The Curt Hawkins losing streak angle also continued:
Meanwhile, Matt Hardy worked singles matches against Karl Anderson with his brother, Jeff, sidelined and awaiting shoulder surgery.
On the Smackdown roster, . Primo Colon also made his return to the ring after missing the entire summer with a knee injury. Jinder Mahal and Shinsuke Nakamura faced off in the main event in a preview of their upcoming WWE Title match.
Adam Cole had his first match at a live event since signing with WWE. The former three-time ROH World Champion teamed with Bobby Fish and Kyle O'Reilly in a series of six-man tags against SAnitY. The roster of wrestlers touring New England also included Mae Young Classic winner Kairi Sane, as well as Dakota Kai.
Donovan Dijak also made his WWE in-ring debut. Billed simply as "Dijak", he headlined the September 23 event in Largo, FL, where he took on Aleister Black in a losing effort.
