Khabib Nurmagomedov announced his retirement from professional MMA competition after becoming the undisputed UFC lightweight champion at UFC 254 and Georges St. Pierre, who was surprised by the announcement, says Nurmagomedov was one of the best to compete in MMA.
GSP, while calling Nurmagomedov one of the best in MMA, thought the lightweight champion would want to go to 30-0 as a professional MMA fighter.
“I was surprised. I was not expecting that at all. I was surprised at his performance to,. I know he’s incredibly good, I just…I didn’t know how good he was. I know he was good, but he brought it to a different gear. I was surprised he retired because the media said he wanted to do 30 and 0. That’s his choice, what a great way to finish a career. He left an incredible legacy. One of the best to have ever done it, maybe the best to have ever done it,” GSP said in an interview with Ariel Helwani of ESPN.
There was talk at one time that Nurmagomedov would face St. Pierre in his next fight, but that obviously won’t be happening now.
