Disgruntled UFC star Nate Diaz, finally seems to have got himself a fight.
ESPN's Brett Okamoto was the first to report the news that Diaz and undefeated welterweight contender, Khamzat Chimaev, have verbally agreed to a headlining bout at UFC 279 on September 10 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Okamoto confirmed the booking with UFC Chief Business Officer Hunter Campbell. Diaz requested his release from the promotion back in March and told journalist Ariel Helwani in an interview on The MMA Hour last week, that he felt the UFC was holding him hostage with one fight left remaining on his current contract.
“The biggest thing that could happen for me is to depart [the UFC]. That’s the biggest thing in my life that I could do right now and that’s all I want to do.”

Diaz is 1-3 in his last four fights and is coming off of a unanimous decision loss to Leon Edwards back at UFC 263 in June 2021. Chimaev meanwhile is 5-0 under the UFC banner since debuting with the promotion in July 2020 and will try to build off of a unanimous decision win over former UFC title challenger, Gilbert Burns, back at UFC 273 in April.
