MMA

A battle for the vacant UFC Women’s Flyweight Title has been added to UFC 231 according to TSN’s Sportscentre as #1 Valentina Shevchenko is in action against #1 (WSW) Joanna Jedrzejczyk.

Shevchenko (15-3-0) is currently undefeated in the women’s flyweight division, having defeated Priscila Cachoeira by second round submission at UFC Fight Night Belem. Shevchenko was supposed to fight then UFC Women’s Flyweight Champion Nicco Montano for the gold at UFC 228, but Montano pulled out of the fight and was subsequently stripped of the title. Shevchenko has previously challenged for the UFC Women’s Bantamweight Title, losing to Amanda Nunes by split decision at UFC 215.

Jedrzejczyk (15-2-0) is going to be making her UFC Women’s Flyweight Division debut in this bout, having previously competed at strawweight. Jedrzejczyk is a former UFC Women’s Strawweight Champion, defeating Carla Esparza to win the gold at UFC 185. Jedrzejczyk has the opportunity to make UFC history in this bout because if she can defeat Shevchenko, it would make Jedrzejczyk the first women in the UFC to hold gold in two different weight classes.

UFC 231 takes place on Saturday, December 8 from the Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, Ontario, Canada with Max Holloway and Brian Ortega headlining. Fightful is providing live coverage of the event, with a post-show podcast to follow.
