Booker T comments on WWE creating a midcard championship for its main roster women for the first time ever.
WWE SmackDown General Manager Nick Aldis announced on the November 8 episode that WWE was creating a Women's United States Championship. While details on how the champion will be crowned are scarce at the moment, it is understood across the wrestling world what this means for the future of women's wrestling now that there is another price to fight for.
Booker T is no stranger to the United States Championship, holding that particular title in both WWE and WCW. When discussing the creation of a WWE Women's United States Championship, Booker compared the title to the WCW TV Title, a title he believes helped elevate him as a singles competitor. Booker believes this is necessary for the division because it helps if wrestlers are always fighting over a meaningful prize while also establishing the champions as next-level players.
“It’s needed. Just because you give the show just that different, extra layer. The thing is, it gives the women something to actually compete for," said Booker on the Hall of Fame Podcast. "It shows how you can move up the ladder, as opposed to you got two tiers, and that’s it. I just think opening that up just a little bit more, I think it makes a whole lot more sense for the business more than anything. One thing about this business, you’re always fighting for championships. You want to win a championship, and it doesn’t necessarily have to be the world title when you first win the championship. You are just happy when you win that first one. Like for me, the Television Championship. I was like, ‘Man, I’m in. I’m doing something right.’ That’s what it told me. Even though it was the title at the lowest tier, so to speak, it let me know that I was in the game, and I think these girls need that as well to make them feel like, ‘Man, I’m moving up.’"
