Cope discusses AEW's creative process and says it's a collaborative effort.
Cope has been in a heated feud with The Death Riders (Jon Moxley, Claudio Castignoli, PAC, Marina Shafir, and Wheeler Yuta) for the past few months. He recently competed in the main event of AEW Revolution, where he challenged Moxley for the AEW World Championship. The finish of the match sparked some controversy, as Christian Cage cashed in his contract, and Moxley went on to choke him out to clinch the win. Cope did not directly take the loss, and there was plenty of interference when he challenged Moxley for the title again on the March 19th episode of AEW Dynamite as well.
Speaking with TV Insider, Cope was asked to discuss the creative process in AEW, specifically regarding where he ends up, and he noted that the wrestlers did not come up with the finishes.
"I don’t factor in where I end up. I always say, 'Where do you need me? You want me to go in this direction? Cool, I’ll start putting together some ideas.' It’s a collaborative effort, but I really enjoy that. I enjoy piecing together stories. Contrary to popular belief, we don’t come up with the finishes. I always just ask where do you need me? Point me in whatever direction you need me, and I’ll get to work. On coming back, it felt like, 'Okay, you want me here because I’m coming back from an injury, I’m nominated for an Emmy and we want to capitalize on that buzz. Cool, let’s do this.' Then we would try to do a cohesive story with the Death Riders and try to get them some momentum going forward," Cope said.
