Daniel Garcia comments on free agents in pro wrestling joining AEW and the notion that they take spots away from more homegrown talents.
Since its inception, AEW has grown from a new major platform for some of the best stars on the independent circuit to ply their trade to a landing spot for some of the top names in the history of pro wrestling, such as Sting, Adam "Edge" Copeland, Christian Cage, and Bobby Lashley.
Daniel Garcia, one of the young stars who got his first significant break with AEW and has remained loyal to the promotion, recently commented on free agents coming to AEW. Speaking to Baby Huey on the In The Kliq Podcast, Garcia expressed that he fails to see how getting the opportunity to learn from these legends could ever be perceived as a negative. However, he admits that sometimes, he understands those concerned about the rise in high-profile free agents coming to AEW. Still, he frequently reminds himself that what is meant for him can never be taken away.
"I don't think anybody in wrestling deserves anything. I don't think there's anybody that deserves one thing. So I'm not like, 'Oh, I deserve this over anybody else.' I do realize that in wrestling, you have to be aggressive in the free agent market," he said. "I realize that you need to sign people to keep things interesting, keep things fresh, keep the roster updated, keep people engaged in what's going on, but I am under the impression that what is for you can't be taken away. So if somebody was to come in, and I'd be afraid that they'd take my spot, or if they did take my spot, then that spot wasn't for me. I'm trying to carve out my own lane, and I don't think that Adam Copeland coming in is going to affect what Daniel Garcia does too much.
"If anything, I think these are people that I can learn from," he continued. "These are people that I can wrestle and, hopefully, I can beat them and put their heads on my fireplace as a collection of legends that I've defeated. I mean, I have a pretty good resume. I've wrestled all these people that have come into AEW that people are afraid, 'Oh, they're going to take these young guys' spots.' I've wrestled all these people. I've wrestled Bryan Danielson, CM Punk, Adam Copeland, Christian Cage, Chris Jericho. I've wrestled all these people. I don't think that me wrestling those people can ever be a bad thing. I can't imagine a world where me wrestling people who have been wrestling in the biggest stages longer than I've been alive could be a net negative for me and anybody who says that kind of stuff. I just don't think they really know what's going on. I do understand where they're coming from. I get why it could look that way, and sometimes it can feel that way. Sometimes, I feel that way too, but I just gotta get out of my own head, realize what it is, and realize what's for me can never be taken away."
Daniel Garcia will next wrestle Adam Cole, another individual with his fair share of moments on the WWE's grand stage. Cole will challenge Garcia for the TNT Title on the March 1 AEW Collision. Fightful will have coverage of the event as it airs.
Adam Copeland has stated that he wants his final match to be with a young AEW wrestler who can gain something from the experience. Learn more here.
