The first Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic took place in October of 2015, where Samoa Joe and Finn Balor defeated Baron Corbin and Rhyno to become the inaugural champions. The second tournament culminated at NXT TakeOver: Toronto on November 19, 2016 where the Authors of Pain defeated TM61 to win the tournament. There was no tournament in 2017.

In both years the tournament took place, it consisted of a 16 team elimination tournament. It currently isn't known if that will continue for this year's version of the Classic.
