Edge stated that he knew he wouldn't have many opportunities left and needed to fight for something he never lost, which was the World Heavyweight Championship, and go on to main event WrestleMania by winning the Royal Rumble.

Edge made his surprise return in the 2020 Royal Rumble, entering at number 21. He had retired in 2011 following a neck injury and cervical vertebral fusion.

Edge suffered a torn triceps at WWE Backlash in "The Greatest Wrestling Match Ever" against Randy Orton. Orton was victorious in the bout. Edge appeared on the June 22 episode of WWE Raw to address his injury and vowing to get revenge on Orton.
