Eric Bischoff On CM Punk vs. Drew McIntyre At WWE Bash In Berlin: They Made Me Care About The Strap Match

Eric Bischoff gives his take on CM Punk vs. Drew McIntyre from WWE Bash In Berlin.

The strap match between the two rivals was highly praised, with some fans even calling it one of the best WWE matches of the year. It appears that the ‘Second City Saint’ and the ‘Scottish Warrior’ are due for third match in the future, as McIntyre sent Punk out of the arena in a stretcher on the September 2 edition of WWE RAW.

On the latest edition of 83 Weeks (via Ad Free Shows), Eric Bischoff praised the match for having a compelling story with sufficient drama.

“If you would’ve asked me a few days ago about the strap match and if it was a good idea, I would’ve shit all over it primarily because I just don’t like gimmick matches, that’s not my go-to. I would’ve been wrong, this match was outstanding, they made me care about the strap match. They did it correctly. They didn’t just go out there and go, okay it’s a strap match, we’re gonna whip the shit out of each other, somebody is gonna bleed eventually. It wasn’t just about the violence, it was about the story. When I say story, it was about the compelling story with sufficient drama to keep you engaged and keep you wondering what’s going to happen next and keep you on the edge of your seat. It’s not a boy meets girl, boy gets girl, boy loses girl, boy gets girl back story. That’s fucking boring, unless you’re Shakespeare, then you turn to the Romeo and Juliet. You can talk about there being a story in a match but there isn’t sufficient drama, if you’re not engaged and it’s not compelling, it’s the tree that falls in the forest. The story, and more importantly the drama that made it compelling, was artistic. It was awesome. I would not have bet 50 cents of somebody else’s money that I would have enjoyed that strap match, but I did.”

Elsewhere in the interview, Eric Bischoff also praised the Bash In Berlin match between Gunther and Randy Orton. Check out his full comments on the matter here.
