Kerry Morton has big goals as NWA Junior Heavyweight Champion.
Kerry Morton picked up his first major singles championship when he won the NWA Junior Heavyweight Championship at NWA Hard Times 2022. Now, he is looking to carve out a legacy of his own aside from the fact that he is the son of former NWA World Tag Team Champion Ricky Morton.
Speaking with Sean Ross Sapp at WrestleCade 2022, Morton expresses his excitement about being champion and talks about his time in the NWA locker room.
"Damn right, they have a ton of junior heavyweights. It’s kind of funny, too," Morton began. "A year ago I started in the National Wrestling Alliance. I’ve been there since December of last year. So 2021 and now we’re coming upon December of 2022. I’ve been there one year and I’m already the Junior Heavyweight Champion. They put a lot of trust in me. They gave me a lot of leadership. They gave me a lot of skill. I had a lot of good mentors back there, too. I give props to Nick Aldis. I have guys in the locker room, Matt Cardona. I get to hear from Sean Ross from time to time, getting a little blurry message in the DM box, a little scoop."
Speaking about his goals now that he is champion, Morton discussed wanting to defend the title in other promotions and says former World Champions EC3 and Austin Aries have approached him about wanting potential title shots.
"You know, Sean, I’m so fortunate to be booked up every single weekend for months in advance. Especially when cheerleading competition comes around, I slow down a little, but with them I have the opportunity to defend this championship in other promotions and independent shows," said Morton. "Possibly, wink wink, to Game Changer Wrestling here in the foreseeable future and some of their junior heavyweights. So with that, I get the chance to wrestle. I’ve been around WrestleCade. I see all these faces and a couple of people grabbed me aside. Austin Aries being one of them, said, ‘Hey, bro. I want a shot,’ kind of gave me a look and then I happened to see EC3 grab me and say, ‘Hey, I’m close to the 225.’"
