Luke Kurtis Talks Competing In NJPW, Says It's Going To Add Layers To His Work

Luke Kurtis is bringing amateur wrestling to the squared circle.

Before jumping into the world of professional wrestling, Luke Kurtis had a solid background in amateur wrestling. Now, Kurtis is using that prior skill to only build up his in-ring portfolio.

While chatting with Fightful for a new interview, Kurtis explained how he struggled with blending the two styles together at first.

"Absolutely. There’s so many layers to this right now. Because when I got into professional wrestling and I was learning the art of what we do, there's a lot of like shooting. I'm very like hands-on, very stiff with people, grabbing them, very aggressively and they have to pull that
back. Sometimes guys can't get out of that, that feel of an amateur wrestling bout. So I had a hard time figuring out how to blend the amateur style in with like the professional wrestling style.

Then, Kurtis talked about how he's been able to blend the styles successfully while competing and working with NJPW.

"Now since I just did the New Japan dojo in LA. That's gonna add layers to my work. Because they do things different there. The strong style is closer to amateur wrestling. They add a lot of elements of amateur wrestling into that. So being able to go work with like New Japan and kind of figure out how to blend my amateur wrestling in with my pro wrestling, I think that's really gonna make a difference."

Elsewhere in the interview, Kurtis revealed that Triple H has been more hands-on when it comes to putting together weekly shows. Check out his full comments by clicking here.
