Goldberg last wrestled at WWE Crown Jewel 2021 where he defeated Bobby Lashley. He was originally scheduled to face Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 36, but Reigns pulled out of the event due to health concerns as the COVID pandemic was just beginning. Goldberg would remain on the card, losing the WWE Universal TItle to Braun Strowman.
Fightful Select first reported the news of Goldberg's return on February 3.
