Gunther: I Never Saw Myself Being On The WWE Main Roster

Gunther did not believe he would make it to the WWE main roster while in NXT.

In 2018, Gunther signed with WWE and would go on to have success in NXT UK, where he would hold the championship for 870 days. Following this reign, he would move onto the main NXT brand for a short stint before ending up on the WWE main roster in April of 2022.

While speaking to The Ringer's Cameron Hawkins in a recent interview, Gunther spoke about his time in NXT, noting that he did not believe he would make it to the WWE main roster.

“I never saw myself being on the main roster, I always felt like I’m not going to fit in there.”

That being said, Gunther has not had to change anything by WWE's hand since his main roster callup, as fans get to see the "real" Gunther.

“Nobody ever in WWE told me to change anything. Nobody does [what I do] better than me. And that’s what I have to offer. I’m not that wrestler that comes out of this system that something doesn’t work, and next week I have a new character; that won’t happen in my case because I’m myself.”

Gunther is currently scheduled to challenge for the World Heavyweight Championship at SummerSlam this weekend, where he will look to dethrone Damian Priest.

In a seperate interview, Gunther spoke about nearly quitting the wrestling business in the 2010s. You can read more about that here.
