Former NXT Champions will clash on WWE Speed.
On the July 10 episode of WWE Speed, Baron Corbin defeated Angelo Dawkins to advance to the next round of the new #1 Contender's Tournament. WWE also announced that Ilja Dragunov will face Carmelo Hayes in the other first-round match in the tournament on the July 17 episode of WWE Speed.
The winner of the tournament will challenge Andrade for the WWE Speed Championship.

Dragunov and Hayes previously had a heated rivalry in WWE NXT. Hayes beat Dragunov to retain the NXT Championship at NXT Great American Bash 2023. Dragunov then defeated Hayes to win the title at NXT No Mercy 2023. Draguniov also beat Hayes to retain the championship at NXT Halloween Havoc 2023.
Hayes and Dragunov were called up to the main roster in the 2024 WWE Draft. Dragunov was selected by Raw, while Hayes was picked by WWE SmackDown.
