Jeff Hardy Clarifies That His Comments About Retiring CM Punk Were Made As A Gag

Jeff Hardy clarifies that his comments about wanting a retirement match against CM Punk were simply in jest.

During an interview at the end of 2024, Jeff Hardy commented that he would like to return to WWE and eventually face CM Punk in a retirement match. Punk originally sent Hardy out of WWE in 2009. Punk commented on these remarks, saying that many bridges would need to be crossed.

Jeff Hardy clarified in an interview with Bill Pritchard of WrestleZone that he was only kidding with those comments and doesn't see that scenario as likely. He also parroted Punk's comments that he'd like to fly, too, but it's not possible.

"Yeah, I hear that so much still to this day, 'In '09, man, when CM Punk made you retire? Man, oh, my God, I cried.' I hear that so much still to this day. So yeah, I just said that as a joke one day, and I saw that [Punk's response]. My wife showed it to me first. I saw it through Matt, and yeah, I mean, I'd like to fly, but that's not gonna happen," he said with a laugh.
