Jim Ross believes Darby Allin deserves all the accolades, and is a star.
Darby Allin is a polarizing talent for a lot of fans, with many being concerned for his safety due to his desire to take part in some of the most dangerous spots in wrestling. At AEW Revolution last weekend, Darby would take part in Sting's final match as they teamed together to defend the AEW World Tag Team Championships against The Young Bucks. During the contest, Darby would take a plunge from the top of a ladder through a pane of glass, opening up a large amount of cuts on his back.
The spot has been largely criticised by many, but AEW announcer Jim Ross spoke on Allin during a recent episode of Grilling JR, noting that while he was scared for Darby, he was also proud of the bravery Allin exuded by partaking in the spot.
"I was scared for this kid. You knew he was going to try and do something special and something extraordinary. He did, and he succeeded. He was on his game. He was one of the stars of the entire night. Going through the glass and the glass cutting his back, very drastic, very compelling, that’s Darby. There is nothing too dangerous or too compelling for Darby Allin, it doesn’t seem like. He never ceases to amaze me. That’s why he’s one of the top pro wrestlers in the entire world, and I’m glad we got him. I know that match meant a lot to him because he felt like a lot depended on his performance and the things he was going to do. I had no idea about the glass, which is great for me because I could react naturally. It was horrible, in a good way. I don’t know of any other talent that would attempt or even consider something this drastic. Nobody but Darby. He deserves all the accolades. I love that kid. I just hope he can continue to dodge the bullets that he loads in his own gun and starts shooting. No assignment is too big. He created this stunt. This is what he wanted to do. Somebody didn’t come to him with a piece of paper, ‘we want you to do these three things.’ It was all Darby. For a guy to think all afternoon what he was going to do with the glass, I find to be extremely extraordinary and brave. I’m proud to work with Darby and he’s my friend. He’s a star. A massive star."
JR continued, noting that he felt the spot was one step away from being too much.
"It was one step away from being too much. I had to see it to believe it. Maybe I didn’t want to believe it because I knew the dangerous elements that existed, but it added amazingly to the match. It’s pieces of this match that we’ll never forget. The glass was certainly one of those elements. I was very impressed, in kind of a compelling and grotesque way, as to what he did. I wasn’t sure what they were going to do. I saw the glass to I figured somebody would go through it. It was unbelievable. I can’t imagine what Darby’s body felt like getting those shards of glass everywhere. All the blood, pain, and all the suffering her endured to make this work. It was a hell of a job by Darby Allin, the Bucks, everybody involved. Nobody dropped the ball. This match was perfectly executed. It’s subjective to say, ‘The glass was too much for me.’ Well, it might be. If so, just process it and move on. That’s what we got. What we got was something we’ll never forget."
Allin would appear on the March 6th edition of AEW Dynamite, where he told the AEW fans how much he appreciated them in case his climb of Mount Everest does not go as planned.
Allin is currently scheduled to face off with Jay White in singles action at AEW Big Business on March 13th.
