John Oliver and 'Last Week Tonight' once again took aim at WWE and their decision to keep Crown Jewel in Saudi Arabia.
On the Oct. 14 edition of the show, Oliver grilled WWE for dragging their feet when it came to deciding whether or not they would remain in Saudi Arabia on Nov. 2 for Crown Jewel. Oliver blasted the company, saying, “Wow, it seems that WWE is as advertently pro Saudi Arabia as it is lately homoerotic which is to say, intently. As for the WWE, while they say they are monitoring the situation, their gigantic Crown Jewel event is still scheduled for November meaning John Cena could well be back there doing this *You Can’t See Me gesture* which I guess in this context would mean, ‘You don’t see these human rights abusers right here.'"
After weeks of "monitoring the situation," WWE decided on Thursday that they would remain in Saudi Arabia despite the Saudi government being linked to the death of journalist Jamal Khashoggi. The decision was met with immediate backlash from everyone, including fans and the media. Talent such as John Cena and Daniel Bryan are reportedly refusing to work the event. ESPN host Dan Le Batard called the company "the sewer" and criticized them for overtly taking "blood money."
Not surprisingly, 'Last Week Tonight' went back to the WWE-Saudi Arabia well with a new video, helping WWE "promote" the upcoming event.
WWE likes mainstream publicity, but it's doubtful this is the kind they are looking for.
