Alberto Del Rio is the reigning AAA Mega Champion and has been so for over 250 days.
Del Rio (Alberto El Patron in AAA) has a troubled past that includes a 2020 arrest for alleged battering and sexual assault against his girlfriend. The charges were later dropped. He's also made threats against his former girlfriend Paige (aka Saraya).
He was fired from WWE in 2014 due to "unprofessional conduct" following an altercation with an employee who allegedly made a racist joke. His name has circulated in rumors regarding a potential WWE return over the past decade, but WWE has denied any chance of him returning.
With WWE purchasing AAA, fans have wondered what that means for Del Rio.
Asked about Del Rio's status moving forward, AAA booker Konnan stated on his Keepin It 100 podcast, "I don't know. I haven't even asked."
On April 19, Fightful Select published the following report on Del Rio:
For those asking about the relationship between WWE and top champion Alberto Del Rio, for years WWE had given everyone a "hard no" on working with Del Rio. Del Rio himself would claim that conversations had taken place, but at points said he would "never" work for WWE again. Those close to Del Rio claim that he's said different, and that the two sides had discussed possible appearances, and that it was no longer "contentious."
