Marty "The Moth" Martinez Wins Gift Of The Gods Title, Cashes In To Win Lucha Underground Championship

For years, it has been a tradition in Lucha Underground that the Gift of the Gods champion would have a shot at the Lucha Underground title whenever he wants so long as he gives the promoter a week’s notice.

Now with Antonio Cueto taking the reins over Dario Cueto, he has made multiple changes that changed the status quo inside the Temple, including erasing the one-week notice. As a result, Marty “The Moth” Martinez ended up winning the Lucha Underground Championship less than an hour after winning the Gift of the Gods title.

On the latest episode of Lucha Underground, Martinez defeated El Dragon Azteca Jr. to win the Gift of the Gods title. By that point, the rule was still that he needed to give a week’s notice before challenging for Pentagon Dark's Lucha Underground title. After the main event later in the episode, which saw Pentagon retain the Lucha Underground Championship against Mil Muertes and King Cuerno, Antonio came out and said Martinez can immediately challenge for the title after Martinez had already attacked Pentagon after the match.

Below is the ending of the impromptu title match from Fightful’s coverage of Lucha Underground:

Pentagon chops Martinez out of the top rope and then hits a Canadian Destroyer. Martinez rolls away and a strange woman appears in the ring, kicks Pentagon down low and then hits a Canadian Destroyer to Pentagon. Martinez hits a package piledriver and gets the pin and we have a new Lucha Underground Champion.

Martinez has been a regular on Lucha Underground for the past few seasons, but has barely appeared on television in this fourth season. Martinez appeared in the ending scene of last week's Lucha Underground and before that, he was eliminated by Pentagon in Aztec Warfare on the season opener.
