Nyla Rose discusses the Oklahoma Athletic Commission incident.
Back in December 2023, Nyla Rose wrestled Alejandra Lion during a Ring Of Honor taping that took place in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. In January 2024, the Oklahoma Athletic Commission held a meeting about this, as they don't allowed transgender performers to compete in the state.
This news went public in April 2024, as Dr. Larry Lovelace warned the company that action would be taken if another transgender performer wrestles in the state of Oklahoma. Tony Khan, many wrestlers, and many fans stood by Rose at this time.
In May, Brandon Thurston of Wrestlenomics obtained documents showing that the state is considering changing the rule. A meeting is set to go down on July 10, 2024.
On the latest episode of Close Up, Nyla Rose talked to Renee Paquette about the situation, noting that she had no idea that anything was going on until moments before it hit the news cycle.
“It’s such a crazy, crazy situation. It definitely caught me blindsided, I had no idea any of that was going on. But kudos to our company and our team who were like the ozone layer up there protecting me and I guess us from it. I had no idea that was even going on. They were like, ‘Hey, something is coming out, you should be aware of this.’ [I only found out] right before, only because it was gonna hit the news news. Our team was up there defending and protecting.”
Rose then joked that she was frustrated with the positive reaction to the incident, as it forced her to turn babyface.
“I was frustrated because it forced me to turn baby [laughs]. I had some very evil plans on the table and everybody was so nice and loving and accepting that I had no choice. Evil cloak has been put away for a while, I owe you guys because you were so good to me.”
Fightful will update fans if the Oklahoma Athletic Commission chooses to eliminate their rule against transgender wrestlers.
