After months of waiting, STARDOM's 5STAR Grand Prix has officially begun as it is the tournament's opening weekend. Saturday saw day one of the tournament commence as it featured eight tournament matches between the Red Stars Block and Blue Stars Block. Some of the major matches on the night saw Syuri trying to beat AZM for the first time ever in the 5STAR Grand Prix as well as Giulia and Hazuki facing off one-on-one for the first time since Hazuki retired in 2019.
One of the important stories heading into the weekend was Prominence's Suzu Suzuki having to be taken off the shows due to "poor physical condition." Suzuki would make the announcement that she tested positive for COVID-19 on Friday. Her tournament matches against Starlight Kid and Ami Sourei were both taken off of the shows. There's no word yet on whether they will be postponed or if the Regina di WAVE Champion will have to forfeit both of them.
As a plus to the opening weekend of the tournament, KAIRI will participate in a tag team match on both shows. The opening night saw her tag with former partner Nanae Takahashi to take on Saya Kamitani and Ami Sourei ahead of KAIRI's highly-speculated Wonder of Stardom Championship challenge.
Back to the 5STAR Grand Prix, the tournament is one of the most anticipated events of the year in professional wrestling. STARDOM announced the participants for the tournament back in May as it was revealed the 2022 edition of the Grand Prix would be the largest in history with 26 participants, six more than last year's.
