Rey Mysterio: Dominik Mysterio's Growth Has Been Incredible, I've Enjoyed The Evolution Of His Character

Rey Mysterio discusses Dominik's growth in WWE.

During his childhood, Dominik memorably appeared on WWE TV throughout Rey Mysterio's feud with Eddie Guerrero, as the two stars clashed over paternity of him. Dominik later got involved in Rey's rivalry with Brock Lesnar in 2019 before he became a recurring part of WWE TV in 2020. The young Mysterio made his on-ring debut at WWE SummerSlam 2020. He then formed a tag team with Rey, and the father-son duo won the SmackDown Tag Team Championship at WWE WrestleMania Backlash 2021. Dominik eventually betrayed Rey and joined The Judgment Day at WWE Clash at the Castle 2022. Their feud stretched on for the next several months, and though he initially refused, Rey finally agreed to face Dominik at WWE WrestleMania 39.

Speaking with WESH News 2, Rey was asked about Dominik's growth as a performer throughout the past several months. Rey stated that it has been incredible, and he's proud of the progress his son has made. He noted that it was hard for Dominik to be in his shadow, but he expressed his gratitude for Dominik's ongoing growth.

“Incredible. You can only imagine the pride that I feel watching him on TV. I’m on SmackDown, he’s on Raw, so to be able to just sit down at home with my wife and view his matches, hear his promos, just witness his growth throughout the past year and a half [or] year since we were separated, every now and then, I’ll look at my wife and go, ‘Wow, could you believe how much he’s grown, and how good he’s getting?’ I hear it, I hear the buzz. I see what’s going on, so that makes me feel extremely proud of his work. It was very hard for him to walk in my footsteps or be in my shadow because of what I’ve created for the past 34 years. So it’s beautiful, man. I am truly blessed to be able to see his growth and just enjoy watching him," Rey said.

When asked to describe what he thought about Prison Dom the first time he saw the character, Rey stated that he genuinely cracked up. He made it clear that he enjoys the way his son is becoming his own man and making a name for himself. Rey emphasized that he likes the evolution of Dominik's character

"I cracked up, a genuine laugh. I love how he’s molding into becoming his own man. He’s not holding onto my name anymore. He’s creating his own name and his own legacy, and that’s what we eventually want for our own kids to do. But again I’ve been enjoying so much his evolution within his character, whether he’s Prison Dom or he’s the annoying son that wants to get his way every single time," Rey said.
