The Rock Announces Live-Action Remake Of 'Moana', Set To Reprise Role As Maui

What can The Rock say except, "You're welcome"?

During the the Disney 2023 Annual Meeting of Shareholders Webcast on April 3, Dwayne Johnson, also known as The Rock, announced that a live-action remake of "Moana" is in development. He noted that he will bring Maui, the character he played in the film, to life, and he'll be honoring his grandfather, Peter Maivia, when he does. He stated that Maivia inspired the Maui character, and he also emphasized the personal depth of the story. The Rock stated that the project is in the early stages, and there's a lot of work to be done.

The Rock also commented on the news in a tweet.

The Hollywood Reporter notes that Johnson and his Seven Bucks Productions company will produce the film alongside Dany Garcia and Hiram Garcia. Jared Bush, who wrote the screenplay for "Moana", is back to write the remake with Dana Ledoux Miller. The report also notes that Auli‘i Cravalho will executive produce with Scott Sheldon of Flynn Picture Co. Cravalho voiced Moana in the original.

Walt Disney Pictures released "Moana" in 2016. It received Academy Award nominations for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song. As Maui, Johnson memorably sang the song, "You're Welcome" in the movie.
